A programmer in Japan is currently facing criminal charges for the mere development of a peer-to-peer file sharing program.
On May 10, 2004, the Kyoto prefectural police arrested Isamu Kaneko, developer of Winny, the immensely popular P2P bulletin board and file-sharing software in Japan.
In the past, the development of peer-to-peer software has been ruled as legal in several cases, ie. the cases for Grokster and Morpheus. Kaneko's arrest is clearly not in line with the international trend.
Furthermore, it is one that sets a precedent to stifle technological innovation -- If we allow this kind of logic to prevail, it would be possible to arrest knife makers just because some of them were used for murder.

Please spread the word on this case; we need as much international awareness as we can raise!
